The Buteyko Breathing Method

The breath is a powerful way to access our autonomic system.

"Over-breathing (hyperventilation) and abnormal breathing patterns (dysfunctional breathing) are commonly associated with anxiety, and breathing-control exercises have long been used as a treatment for anxiety and panic. Hyperventilation and other abnormalities in breathing have also been associated with asthma, implicated as triggers for bronchoconstriction".  Breathing exercises for asthma, Mike Thomas, Anne Bruton, Breathe 2014 10: 312-322

The breathing training techniques most frequently investigated have been physiotherapist-administered breathing exercises [27–30], as well as alternative techniques, such as the Buteyko breathing method [31–33] and yogic breathing [34, 35].  Of these, physiotherapy and Buteyko have the higher level of evidence and are now mentioned in several guidelines for asthma management.  Breathing exercises for asthma, Mike Thomas, Anne Bruton, Breathe 2014 10: 312-322

The breath has two unique properties with profound ramifications:
  1. It is one of the only ways we can effectively change our autonomic response and engage the parasympathetic system
  2. A decrease in CO2 not only leads to bronchoconstriction and increased inflammation in the airways; it also affects the body's pH balance (respiratory alkalosis) and the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen (Bohr effect).  These combined lead to hypoxia and "twitchiness"
Breathing from your nose, softly through the diaphragm
helps relax your blood vessels
 improving microcirculation throughout the body
particularly the brain and heart
